Janzi4Hope Plans a Charity Drive in Eastern Uganda in October

Building on its mission to uplift vulnerable communities and harness the transformative power of the arts, the Janzi4Hope Foundation has announced an expansive charity drive scheduled for Eastern Uganda this October.

Spearheaded by visionary Ugandan artist and Janzi instrument inventor James Ssewakiryanga, popularly known as Ssewa Ssewa, the upcoming initiative will focus heavily on discovering, nurturing, and developing raw, untapped talent among the youth in the region.

Since its founding in 2023, Janzi4Hope has actively bridged the gap between disparity and opportunity across the country. Following successful outreach programs earlier this year—including the donation of a Janzi instrument to creatives in Gulu and a philanthropic visit to the Home of Hope in Jinja—the foundation is now setting its sights on creating sustainable platforms for youth empowerment in the East.

The October 2026 charity drive is designed to go beyond traditional relief. While the foundation will continue its core work of providing scholastic materials and basic necessities, the primary focus will be on arts and cultural upliftment.

“True empowerment means giving young people the tools to articulate their stories, discover their potential, and build their own futures.”

The multi-day outreach program will roll out across several districts in Eastern Uganda, featuring a diverse lineup of activities aimed at capacity building:

  • Talent Incubation Workshops: Interactive sessions focusing on musical training, traditional instrumentation, and vocal coaching, led by experienced members of the Ugandan arts community.

  • Instrument Donations: Similar to the recent Northern Uganda initiative, Janzi4Hope plans to donate musical instruments—including the patented 22-string Janzi—to local youth centers and community schools.

  • Mentorship and Life Skills: Engaging local youth in conversations about leveraging their creative talents into marketable skills and potential livelihoods, helping to address youth unemployment.

  • Community Showcases: Providing an immediate platform for young artists to perform, collaborate, and gain confidence in their newfound abilities.

Ssewa Ssewa’s personal journey—learning music through grassroots traditions rather than formal training—remains the driving force behind the foundation’s methodology. By bringing direct, hands-on musical and artistic experiences to the youth of Eastern Uganda, Janzi4Hope aims to build a self-reliant generation equipped to use culture as both a therapeutic and economic tool.

As October approaches, the foundation is calling upon local leaders, volunteers, and potential partners to join hands in making the Eastern Uganda drive a resounding success. Through collaborative efforts, Janzi4Hope continues to ensure that the harmonious strings of opportunity resonate in every corner of the country.
