In a continuous effort to foster musical talent and cultural preservation across Uganda, renowned multi-instrumentalist James Ssewakiryanga, popularly known as Ssewa Ssewa, has extended his philanthropic reach to Northern Uganda. Through his charity organization, the Janzi4Hope Foundation, the artist recently donated a Janzi instrument to support and develop aspiring musicians in Gulu.

The donation in Gulu represents a significant step for the Janzi4Hope Foundation, an organization Ssewa Ssewa founded to positively impact the lives of vulnerable individuals in Uganda through music-centered activities. By providing access to this unique instrument, the foundation aims to give youth in Gulu a platform for creative expression, therapeutic engagement, and potential economic empowerment.

Ssewa Ssewa, who is also the founder and musical director of the Afro-fusion group Janzi Band, understands the transformative power of accessible music education. Growing up as the son of a traditional drummer and dancer, he never received formal professional musical training, learning his first instrument—the xylophone—directly from his mother. This grassroots introduction to music heavily influences his current mission to ensure young talents in regions like Gulu have the tools they need to discover their own potential.

The instrument donated to the Gulu creatives is no ordinary piece of equipment. The Janzi is a 22-string harp-like instrument invented by Ssewa Ssewa himself. While it draws inspiration from the traditional Ugandan adungu, the Janzi features distinct design elements and functionalities that allow it to be seamlessly integrated into modern musical setups.

Recognized for its innovation, the Janzi holds the distinction of being patented as a completely separate and unique musical instrument. The instrument is famously named after the Luganda word for grasshopper, reflecting the founder’s vision that its music—and the cultural heritage it carries—will fly globally.

For Ssewa Ssewa, the donation in Gulu is part of a larger dream to solidify Uganda’s sonic presence on both a local and international stage. He has actively advocated for the protection of cultural heritage, recently taking a strong stance to defend the Janzi trademark and brand identity from being repurposed by corporate entities.

Through the Janzi4Hope Foundation’s expanding outreach, the crystalline melodies of the Janzi are now reaching beyond the capital, bringing a message of resilience, community, and innovation to the young artists of Gulu.
